Symptoms and Exposure Information of Mercury Toxicity

Elemental Mercury  is present in thermometers, sphygmomanometers, barometers, and some latex paints produced before 1991.  The contaminated clothes of those that work in industries producing these products can be a source of exposure for family members.  Broken fluorescent lights can also increase mercury exposure.  Symptoms of elemental mercury poisoning include:

  • Nervousness, insomnia, learning difficulty, memory problems, inability to concentrate, neuropathy, and tremor

  • Proteinuria (protein in the urine)

  • Allergic dermatitis, gingivitis, stomatitis, excessive salivation

  • Rash of the hands and feet, sweating, irritability, sweating

Inorganic Mercury is found in pesticides, disinfectants, antiseptics, pigments, dry batteries, and preservatives in some medicinal preparations.  Symptoms of inorganic mercury poisoning include:

  • Nervousness, insomnia, learning difficulty, memory problems, inability to concentrate, neuropathy, and tremor

  • Vomiting, abdominal pain, intestinal perforation, proctitis, colitis (inflammation of the colon)

  • Acute Kidney failure

Organic Mercury is found in food products such as fish containing methyl mercury.  Mercury containing compounds from industry increase levels of mercury in the environment.  Methyl mercury accumulates in soil and water which eventually accumulates in fish which are then consumed by the general population.  These food products include tuna, prawns, cold-smoked meats, shark, shrimp and other popular forms of seafood.  Symptoms of organic mercury poisoning include:

  • Autism may affect 1 in every 150 children.

  • Thimerosal  (46% mercury) is a common preservative in many vaccines used in children during the first two years of life.
