What is low sex drive?

Sex drive is a subjective term used to describe a person’s sexual desire.  It is not quantifiable and there is no “appropriate level”. In fact, a person’s sex drive will vary from individual to individual. For example, it is normal for person A to have a higher or lower sex drive than person B.  However, a person is said to have “low sex drive” when there is persistent decrease or lack of interest in sexual relations in comparison to their baseline.

Why Does Testosterone Levels Decrease As I Get Older?

    • The testes produce testosterone and there are actually two types that circulate in the body.  There is a free, or active type, and an inactive type, the one attached to proteins.  When the inactive type is bound to a protein called sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), the body is not able to use this testosterone. 
    • Older men were found to produce more of this protein, SHBG.  The SHBG will attach to more of the circulating testosterone, lowering the total amount of the active form in the blood.  

o       Since a majority of the body’s testosterone is in the inactive form, almost 98%, this leaves only 2% of the active testosterone.   So, in older men, the amount of the active type is further lowered by this age-related decrease in testosterone production.
