Instant Cholesterol Test

Background Information:

            Cholesterol is a waxy substance found among the fats in the bloodstream and in all the cells of the body.  Cholesterol is healthy to the body because it helps form cell membranes, some hormones, and other types of tissue.  However, cholesterol becomes bad to the body when the levels of cholesterol become higher than normal.  Then it becomes a major risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), also known as coronary artery disease (CAD), that can lead to heart attack if the cholesterol levels are not controlled.  Cholesterol either comes from the body (produced primarily by the liver) or from animals found in foods (meats, dairy products, poultry, fish, and seafood).  Foods from plants (fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts & seeds) do not contain cholesterol.  Cholesterol cannot dissolve in blood so it needs to be carried out by lipoproteins, such as high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL).  HDL is the “good cholesterol” because it removes excess cholesterol from atherosclerotic plaques.  LDL is the “bad cholesterol” because it can slowly build up within the walls of the arteries and narrow the pathway.  Therefore, LDL is the primary target for cholesterol-lowering therapy.  There are no warning signs for high cholesterol levels.  However, when symptoms finally do occur, it usually takes the form of angina or a heart attack due to the plaque buildup in the arteries.  This is the reason why prevention is important before dangerous, life-threatening symptoms do occur.  For prevention purposes, Home Access Health Corporation came up with a single-use disposable test, Home Accessâ Instant Cholesterol Home TestÔ, that tests for the total cholesterol from a blood sample.
