FAQ and ANSWERS:

1.      What is coronary heart disease (CHD)?

Coronary heart disease is when the coronary artery is not getting enough oxygen because of an interruption in the blood supply (either a blood clot or plaque build up inside the artery).  When the artery is almost or completely blocked, an infarct can occur, which is permanent tissue damage.  The most common form of CHD is atherosclerosis, which is an accumulation and deposits of cholesterol and lipids in the artery wall.

2.      What are the symptoms of CHD?

One of the classic symptoms people experience is described as "chest pain that radiates to the left arm, neck, jaw, and shoulder blade."

3.      Why should I test my cholesterol level?

Cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for developing heart disease.  It is important to find out what your cholesterol levels are because lowering high cholesterol levels decreases the chance of having a heart attack or dying from heart disease.

4.      Will eating a big meal affect the result?

According to NCEP (ATP) III guideline, the measurement of any lipid is preferably performed when the patient does not have acute illnesses, such as stroke, trauma, surgery, acute infection, weight loss, pregnancy, or recent change in usual diet.  There is no definite data that states that a “big meal” affects the result, but it is best to avoid such a meal just prior to testing.

5.      At what age should I have my cholesterol tested and how often?

All adults aged 20 years or older should be tested at least once every 5 years (only if not diagnosed of having high cholesterol).  The people who have elevated cholesterol requiring changes in diet or drug therapy, or who have been diagnosed with heart disease will require to test their cholesterol profile more frequently, at least once a year.

6.      I’ve heard on the news about metabolic syndrome, what is that exactly?

People who are categorized to have metabolic syndrome requires aggressive treatment.  If you have any three of the following, you may be classified as having this syndrome and require lifestyle changes or therapy.  The metabolic syndrome characteristics are abdominal obesity (waist >40” for men or 35” for women), triglycerides >150 mg/dL, HDL <40 mg/dL for men or 50 mg/dL for women, blood pressure >130/85, and pre-diabetic high blood sugar (>110 mg/dL fasting glucose).
