HIV Testing

Background Information:

Over 1 million Americans are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1).  The Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) is the virus that causes AIDS.  AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a disease that limits the body's ability to fight infection. People with AIDS usually have a very weak immune system, turning normally mild diseases into potentially fatal conditions.  A person can be HIV-infected for many years while looking and feeling healthy, with no signs of being sick at all.

The following symptoms may be warning signs of infection with HIV:

·         Rapid weight loss

·         Dry cough

·         Recurring fever or profuse night sweats

·         Profound and unexplained fatigue

·         Swollen lymph glands in the armpits, groin, or neck

·         Diarrhea that lasts for more than a week

·         White spots or unusual blemishes on the tongue, in the mouth, or in the throat

·         Pneumonia

·         Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids

·         Memory loss, depression, and other neurological disorders

NOTE:  No one should assume they are infected with HIV if they have any of these symptoms.  The symptoms may be related to other illnesses.  The only way to positively diagnose someone is to be tested for HIV infection.  A doctor based on specific criteria established by the CDC should make the medical diagnosis.

The persons infected may remain unaware of their infection and continue to pass the infection to their sexual partner.  This virus is passed from one person to another through blood-to-blood and sexual contact.  In addition, infected pregnant women can pass HIV to their baby during pregnancy or delivery, as well as through breast-feeding.

HIV is transmitted via:

·         Blood

·         Semen

·         Vaginal fluid

·         Breast milk

·         Other body fluids that contain blood

Health care workers may come into contact with other bodily fluids that can be transmitted via:

·         Cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord

·         Synovial fluid surrounding bone joints

·         Amniotic fluid surrounding a fetus

People all over the world are educated on this disease, such as not to share needles with anyone and careful not to touch anyone’s blood or bodily fluids.  Despite the education on this disease, the HIV-1 epidemic continues to grow.  The only way to decrease this epidemic is mainly prevention.  That is why the FDA approved this HIV-1 home test kit.  A blood test is the only method to detect if someone is infected with HIV.  The blood test detects for the presence of antibodies to the virus.  The main purpose of the home HIV-1 testing is for self-use and can remain anonymous.  The intention of the system is to provide education about HIV infection and to offer counseling, medical or psychosocial referrals, and assistance in partner notification.  HomeAccess is the manufacturer of the most popular rapid HIV home test kit in the United States.  This confidential HIV/AIDS test kit is accurate, affordable, and most importantly, private.
