Hepatitis C Testing

Patient Information:

What are the advantages of a home test?

Home testing is fast and convenient for the consumers because the blood sample is collected in the privacy of their own home.  There is no hassle in going to the doctor or to the clinic.  The test allows the patient to take control of their health and well being into their own hands.  The sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.  The results are accurate and reliable because it is comparable to the tests used by doctors and hospitals.

What does the test kit contain?

 Each test kit includes:

·        1 Directional insert containing an informed consent

  • 1 Blood Specimen Collection Card made of filter paper with a Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • 1 Alcohol Prep Swab
  • 1 Gauze Pad
  • 2 Safety Lancets
  • 1 Bandage
  • 1 Foil Barrier Pouch
  • 1 Lancet Disposal Container
  • 1 Cardboard U.S. Mail Envelope
  • 1 HCV “Frequently Asked Questions” information booklet co-produced by the American Liver Foundation
  • Materials for safe specimen shipment to a designated clinical laboratory

When will the results be available?

The results are obtained by calling the toll free telephone number using an anonymous personal fourteen-digit Home Access identification number.  The results are available in 10 business days (Monday-Friday, not including holidays) after the sample was sent in.  After the consumer receives the results by phone, he or she may request a written copy of the results either by email or by U.S. mail.

Why should I be tested for Hepatitis C?

Early diagnosis is important in case you are infected with HCV without being aware of it.  Liver damage can be prevented ahead of time.

How does the test work?

  1. Code Number Registration and Pre-Test Counseling

The first step is to call the toll free number to register your anonymous Home Access code number and complete pre-test counseling, questions and demographic information. You have a choice to either speak to a Home Access counselor or to use their automated registration and education system. The counselors are trained to help consumers with any questions or personal concerns.

  1. Sample Collection

The second step is to wash your hands, and then alcohol wipe the finger where you will draw the sample.  You prick your fingertip with the lancet provided and place the drops of blood on the blood specimen card included in the test kit.  A sufficient amount of blood required for a good sample is to fill the circle on the specimen card, which is the size of  dime.

  1. Shipping

The last step is to place the specimen card with your sample in the enclosed weather resistant protective pouch.  Then you put everything in a self-addressed, pre-paid FedEx® or U.S. Mail shipping envelope, all included in the test kit. The sample is shipped directly to the Home Access certified laboratory for further analysis.

            4.         Laboratory Analysis

The Home Access laboratory is FDA approved and CLIA certified (laboratory registration certificate CLIA #14D0981820).  All samples are shipped directly to, and tested at Mid-American Technologies, Olathe, KS, using an FDA licensed enzyme immunoassay and a recombinant immuno-blot assay.  The samples are tested according to the manufacturers’ instructions for the device and proprietary dried blood spot elution and testing procedures.  Patients can call in for results in just 10 days.

       5.    Post-Test Counseling

There is Home Access® trained counselors available to offer nationwide medical and social service referrals to people requiring further assistance. Counselors can search from more than 19,000 organizations included in the Home Access Health referral database to identify the most appropriate resource to meet each patient’s specific needs.
