       Melatonin has many roles in the body.  It serves as an antioxidant, helps to regulate circadian 

rhythms, has positive impact on the immune system and healing process, may act as a prophylaxis 

against osteoporosis, and could serve as an effective adjunct in the fight against certain types of 

cancers.  Melatonin therapy has been shown effective in treating hormonal rhythm disturbances 

that aggravate symptoms of PMS, insomnia, fatigue, and mood disorders.  Saliva testing offers 

a safe, economical, reliable, and non-invasive way of assessing melatonin levels.  The result can 

be useful in treating any of the wide variety of disorders associated with abnormal melatonin levels.  

  What are the specific instructions we can provide?

        The sample should be collected twice at 8 AM when the melatonin level is the lowest and at midnight when the level is the highest.  Avoid eating and brushing your teeth at least one hour prior to sample collection.  Avoid eating bananas, tomatoes, barley, oats, corn, rice, and ginger the day before the collection.  Factors such as light, exercise, alcohol, and NSAIDS (Motrin or Naproxen) may impair the production of melatonin. 

 What are considered normal ranges of the hormone levels?

 Melatonin 8AM: 3.5-33 pmol/L

Melatonin 12AM: 16-100 pmol/L
